There’s no single Texas law that formally labels a broken AC an “emergency” the way a gas leak is. But Texas summers make it a genuine health issue — extreme heat is dangerous for young children, older adults, and anyone with a heart or respiratory condition, and it’s common for welfare checks to happen over exactly this. Landlords also carry general habitability obligations that can apply to extended AC outages. If your house is genuinely dangerous-hot, treat it like the emergency it is. That’s why we answer the phone at any hour rather than only during business hours.

Multiply your system’s age by the estimated cost of the repair. If the result is well over $5,000, replacement is usually the smarter spend. A moderate repair on a ten-year-old system clears that bar easily; the same repair on a twenty-year-old system often doesn’t. It’s a rule of thumb, not a formula — we’ll walk through your actual system with you rather than just quote the rule back.

We don’t charge for the estimate visit at all — a technician comes out, diagnoses the problem, and explains it for free. Some companies in the Dallas area charge a standalone diagnostic fee; we build that cost into the free visit instead and quote the repair separately, in writing.

Capacitors and contactors cause the majority of “it just stopped” calls, and both are inexpensive parts a technician typically replaces in one visit. After those, condenser fan motors, blower motors, refrigerant leaks and clogged condensate drains are the next most common. Compressor and coil failures are the expensive ones, and thankfully the least frequent.

Wait at least three minutes before restarting a system you’ve just switched off. Restart it sooner and the compressor can try to start against pressure that hasn’t equalized, which is a fast way to turn a minor issue into a major one.

Installation quality matters more than the badge on the unit. A correctly sized, properly installed budget system will usually outlast a premium system that was installed in a hurry. When we’re asked to recommend equipment, we look at local parts availability and what the warranty actually covers, not the brand name.

Most central AC systems in North Texas run 12 to 15 years, sometimes less — our summers put more hours on equipment than most of the country sees. Garland’s older neighborhoods have plenty of systems well past that mark already.
